A Positive Year Behind Us and A Look Ahead

We just completed 2019-20 fiscal year was dynamic as new alums stepped up to serve and reinvigorate Alabama’s Houston, Texas Alumni Chapter.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

We just completed 2019-20 fiscal year was dynamic as new alums stepped up to serve and reinvigorate Alabama’s Houston, Texas Alumni Chapter.

We staffed new positions like never before with our traditional president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary, but also with a scholarship chair, webmaster, social media manager, membership liaison, Young Alumni coordinator, and alumni recruiting manager. All these volunteers are incredibly dedicated, even though most hold full-time jobs.

Together, with your support, we accomplished many things since I took office in early 2019.

  • Hosted a wide variety of events including the 2019 A-Day crawfish boil, Tide on the Town Dinner Series at five suburban locations last summer, Welcome to the City Trivia Night, bus trip to Alabama vs TAMU game, football watch parties and events with other SEC alumni chapters
  • Launched new website as one-stop source of vital information – thank you to Tom See, former webmaster, who built our original site 15 years ago and offered input on the new site
  • Increased paid membership threefold to 126 which helped fund scholarships and chapter operating expenses
  • Contributed $7,000 to our Houston, Texas Alumni Chapter Endowed Scholarship, thanks to your generosity in becoming paid chapter members, giving more than $4200 to our Dollars for Houston Scholars campaign, and stepping up to be chapter and event sponsors.
  • Supported our UA Undergraduate Admissions Recruiter at Prospective Student Meet & Greet, April 2019
  • Student Sendoff for incoming freshmen to UA, May 2019
  • Alumni Scholarship Assistance Program, A$AP, for prospective students and their parents, August 2019
  • Numerous college fairs in the fall and one in the spring
  • UA Prospective Student Reception, Dec 2019, with special guests Dr. Stuart Bell, University President, and Vicki Hollub, President and CEO, Occidental Petroleum
  • Started a Young Alumni Group to reach this fast growing demographic. This group is truly in its infancy and ready to explode with all the new alumni moving to Houston. They’ve held monthly happy hours and other events – some virtual – and now have their own presence on Instagram.
  • Connected with new alumni, parents, students and fans through an expanded social media presence that includes the just mentioned YA Instagram profile, a Facebook Page and private Group, chapter Instagram, and a brand new LinkedIn Group
  • Improved our database, which is critical to keep us connected since UA anti-spam laws prevent UA from sharing email addresses with our chapter
  • Twice hosted UA in Houston networking events with the University Career Center to help student interns and young alums learn about life in Houston

Yes this Covid-19 mess has upset much of what we had planned for the spring and fall, but we are still moving forward. It will not stop us!

July 1 marks a new fiscal year and that means it’s time to renew your membership, or join for the first time. These funds support our chapter scholarships and help pay chapter expenses. I’ve heard from several people that our local officers get paid. Not true! In fact, our officers pay to attend events just like everybody else. It’s our dedication to The University of Alabama that drives us. So whether you’re an alum, parent or super fan of the Crimson Tide, we hope you share this same passion and will support our scholarships for Houston-area students by renewing or joining as a paid member. We’ve improved our online payment method. We hope you find this helpful.

We also have an urgent need for event coordinators. This is a fun way to meet others and can be as simple as hosting a dinner or happy hour at an establishment in your area of town. Or maybe you’d like to organize a golf outing, wine tasting class, pool party, or doggie meet and greet? What about organizing travel to an out-of-town football game?

Other on-going roles include database management, graphic designer and social media content writer. Additionally, Lindsay Rostron, our vice-president who has faithfully served alongside me since I took office, leaves for law school in Vermont later this month. We are happy for Lindsay as she pursues her dreams, but this leaves a void we must fill.

We’re ready to build on this great year and make 2020-21 even better. Please email me if you want to volunteer or have a suggestion. Even better, please join me at one of three virtual town hall meetings on July 27, August 31 or September 28 as I share more about our future, listen to your ideas, and answer questions about volunteering and whatever is on your mind. Register Now!

Finally, thanks you for your support as we drive Bama Houston to be the very best!
